Ultimate Spider-Man #133
Writer: Brian Bendis / Artist: Stuart Immonen

This is my first ever experience with Ultimate Spider-Man. The only reason I even picked this up was because it is the last issue of the run and I wanted to add it to my collection. I'm certain that this issue isn't a good representative of the entire run, but I rather enjoyed it for its symbolism and finality to the Ultimate Universe's tent-pole series.

Brian Bendis cleverly decides to leave out any sort of written word in this issue. There are no thought bubbles, narrations, or dialogue. I took this to mean two different things. First of all, Spider-Man isn't even in this comic because he was lost last issue. Spidey is the voice of this series and therefore without him, there can be no words. The lack of words is also a symbolic moment of silence to end of this run of Ultimate Spider-Man. I enjoyed Bendis's technique and thought it was effective and appropriate.

Thanks to the art of Stuart Immonen, everything was easy to decipher even without words to guide us. His action was fluid and neat. Facial expressions, whether it was fear from Spider-Woman, anger from Kitty Pryde, or distraught from Mary Jane, were easy to read. Immonen's character work was also great. They almost look like they're jumping out of the page. Some of the girls had some big and unruly hair in a few panels but it never distracted from the experience.

I'm not sure if fans of the series will appreciate Spider-Man's farewell comic not having their hero in it. As a newcomer, I was unbiased and able to analyze everything for its symbolism and impact. I hope fans of the series will appreciate Bendis and Immonen's effort as much as I did.
