Green Lantern Corps #36

This issue feels a lot like an issue of the Sinestro Corps War. You get Sinestro making a case for his methods, a breakout on Oa, and Sodam Yat being a super Lantern. While all this seems familiar, it is so much more this time around.

The story with Sinestro and Soranik was great. Finding out about their relationship only further makes him a sympathetic villain. Sinestro has always argued that he fights for the same things that Green Lanterns do, but in a different way. This story delves into his past a little and shows how much he cares for his home planet and its well being. He really does want order, but thinks a dictatorship is the answer. Sinestro returning to his planet to aid Soranik and reveal their relationship was a great character moment for both. He also hints at an upcoming battle with Atrocitus that I cannot wait to see.

While all that was going on, Oa had a little prison break on it. I didn't really understand what was going on, with this being the first issue for me. My best guess is this served as a reason for Sodam Yat to take on Mongul single-handedly. I never liked Sodam Yat. Why is he so arrogant? Why do the Johns and Tomasi write him to be so important? As you can imagine, I was ecstatic to see him get beat down in this issue. A development at the end of the issue has the potential to make me really happy, at expense of Mongul :-(

Remember that prison break that I thought was mostly pointless. Well another reason I think it was there was just so artist, Patrick Gleason, could do his thing. He draws an amazing battle with so much action and detail. Ever panel has a Green Lantern conjuring up super machines and weapons, Yellow Lanterns killing, and Red Lanterns looking terrifying. His work doesn't stop there though. Gleason shines in every aspect of this book. He draws an emotional Soranik, a determined Sinestro, and a desperate battle between Sodam Yat and Mongul.

I am so glad I started reading Green Lantern. This series is amazing. The stories are cohesive and exciting and the art is stellar. Besides Thor, this is my favorite series. Unlike Thor, however, which only comes out every other month, I get to read this book twice a month.
