Uncanny X-Men #512
Writer: Matt Fraction / Artist: Yanick Paquette

Before diving into the crossover with Dark Avengers, Matt Fraction had a few loose ends to tie up. That is the sole purpose of this issue. It pretty much serves as a one-shot about Nemesis's origin and a reintroduction of Pyslocke.

The main plot isn't as significant as Beast made it seem in a previous issue. Basically, Beast theorizes that in order to help the future of mutants, he needs to research the past. Nemesis just so happened to have been born during the mutant boom, so all the scientists, Angel, and Psylocke travel back in time to get blood samples from his parents. The whole story really serves no purpose. It ends up being just a retelling of a typical X-Men versus mutant-haters story, just in a different period of time. Fans of Nemesis are likely the only ones who will truly enjoy this issue.

Fans reeled in by the return of Pyslocke, like me, are given an explanation of her new power set in this issue too, literally. Matt Fraction doesn't even try to get creative with it. Beast literally asks, "What is your new power set?" and then she says that she can move things with her mind and make people see what she wants them to see. I would have appreciated a more artistic approach, but at least I know exactly what she can do now.

Speaking of art, I'm sure most people will be happy Greg Land didn't provide the pencils for this issue. Me? I missed him. His work is more polished and catchy than Yanick Paquette's art in this issue. Paquette is sketchy along the likes of Leinel Yu, except not quite as good. I still enjoyed Paquette's work though. Some of the faces were a little rough looking, but his art and background work fit the tone of the story really well.

Overall, Uncanny X-Men #512 just felt like filler until the Dark Avengers crossover. Fraction probably wanted to do more with the origin story, but ran out of time so crammed it into this insignificant issue.
